Crystal World

swarkovskiIn Watten,Austria, just outside of Innsbruck, we found the headquarters and huge factories of Swarvoski Crystal!

They have a unique (weird) collection of art, as well as how their crystals were used in that art.  It is really too difficult to explain, but it does all end with an enormous gift shop!!!

Mr. Swarvoski created and patented in 1895,  the way to cut a perfect crystal; two years later he had a factory and 100 employees.  Well, I love Swarvoski Crystals, they are in my ears, on KC’s wedding dress and veil, and I think they are as pretty as diamonds without the worry.  But, they were first used in machinery, and for reflective markers on roads, optics in binoculars, and much, much more.

I still did alot of damage in the gift shop.

Olympic Hopeful

olympicsIt was during our daily call to Steve’s dad, George, in Costa Mesa, that we mentioned our stay in Garmish-Partenkirchen; on hearing the location, he came alive with memories!!!

As a youth, he was inspired by the Olympics at Lake Placid  N.Y.to work  harder on his passion, speed skating ,and try for the next olympics (he was living in New York and was a young teenager).  He did try out when the time came, but only made it as second or third alternate to the Garmisch Olympic games in 1936, so he stayed home and continued to dream (he still has lots of medals on display in his home)!

With even more dedication, he focused on the next Winter Olympics but then came war in Europe.  So George,  with thoughts of you in our hearts, your son made it to Garmish .

THIS way out…

Exit signs in Italy and Germanic countries make me laugh.  In Italy, every freeway off-ramp etc are labeled “Uscita”, pronounced  “u-sheet-a”.  Here in Bavaria they are on everything and are “Ausfarht”.  They both sound like potty-humor!

ludwigcastle1Awesome day, tho’ raining.  We headed out to Neuschwanstein Castle.  Think Disneyland and Mad King Ludwig. Oh my goodness!  Incredible!  It has such a view, waterfall, murals, and a hike. It is AMAZING to come upon this sugar-cube castle sitting on top of a mountain, built before major roads, heavy equiptment or tourists.

After our hike in the rain through  the forest, we had a pretzel and some fried “snowballs” (do-nut like or even begnet with powdered sugar) which we scarfed down after all the exercise.

oberamergauredridinghoodThen headed into another mountain valley to Oberammergau – site of the every-10-years Passion play.  Cute!  Do you think dirndls and leiderhosen will ever catch on in San Diego?? It was tempting  to buy one, and people do wear them in everyday life to some extent.

Throughout Bavaria, the houses have beautiful paints on the exteriors, history, or religious, and even a few fairytales. I’m gonna fall again, if I don’t watch my feet and keep my head out of the clouds.garmishweather

There was so much history today, I was at a loss to know what I was looking at.  Shame on me for not thinking beyond Italy (who can blame me).  But I’m gonna do some google-ing and bone up.

Tomorrow we hit Innsbrook (swaraski crystal world) replica rolex and then 4 days in Salzburg (staying at a pension just outside of the city).  I’m ready to yodel, it’s so exciting to see all we are seeing!!!

cowbellSay “cheeeeeese!”

We found it, in the middle of no where – the Emmental Cheese Factory!  It is a beautiful alpine factory sitting atop a large green pasture and it was quite an education.

The cows drop off their milk, some enzymes are added, it curdles and it pressed into molds, and aged, and aged.   Bubbles in the curing process seek to escape, and  wa la….swiss cheese (soundscheesetank like Steve)!

We are in Garmisch, Germany now.  Tomorrow we visit King Ludwig II’s crazy castle (think Disneyland on a mountain peak).

Then on to Salzburg.  Mozart, Sound of Music, struedal and beer? We will find out!

Lovely To Lake At

interlachenDay on the Lake

Interlaken is the land and city between two alpine lakes near Bern (the capitol).  We went by train from Seftigen to Thun to catch the ship that criss-crosses the lake.  We were visiting Heather, Heinz, and their baby Jackson who are friends of our daughter KC (isn’t it great when your kids become adults and share their friends with you!)heinzheather.  We had a beautiful, awesome day in the low 70’s,clear, snowy alps, azure water.

Swiss life is amazing, gentle, and tasty.  The minimum wage is close to $25 an hour, but then it’s $7 for a simple cup of Starbucks. The public transportation is great, lots of pasture and farms with big-eyed cows wearing their bells (not all of them, these are prizes that they get to wear around their necks if they are best in show).  And every home is required to have a bomb shelter replica rolex and air purification system in it.  Heather and Heinz’s made for a great wine cellar with a heavy thick door though it was kind of scary.

Light At The End Of The Tunnel

tunnelTunnels

I had previously thought the Italians were the experts on tunnels – why go over when you can go through.  They know nothing compared to the Swiss!  As we left Italy (Venice via Lake Como), on our way to Bern, we passed thru the longest tunnel in the world!

The Gotthard Tunnel is 35 miles long and you just don’t want to think about it while you are in it.  On the Swiss side, as you exited any tunnel, you would be in a different world than the one you entered.  And Switzerland is drop-dead gorgeous!

One Mans’ Venice…

gondolaracesWe left a gorgeous day in Montalcino to tearful goodbyes and much happiness for all that we experienced.  Heading north, we got on the autostradde just south of Florence and enjoyed some magnificent scenery, from the mountains, to the prairies, to the ocean of Venice.

gondolas-coveredAhhhhh, but Venice. There were no gondolas, water taxis, or vaporettos running on this busy Sunday.  There were races in the canals of all sorts of floating contraptions, but mostly multi-person skulls.  Never saw a start or finish line, but  these had commandeered the scene.  They were fun to watch but couldn’t get to some places because of crowds now all reduced to walking.

venicecrowdWe managed to get to St Mark’s Square, where there is construction limitations on the campanile, only to find it wall to wall people (Multiple cruise ships in port).  Lines were so ridiculously long, we passed on all sights and had a cup of hot chocolate, and people-watched and meandered down alley-ways that weren’t impassable.

We took a bus and a train from Vicenza, where we are staying at a military base, a very ,very nice suite with every amenity.  I was slammed with a head cold rolex replica so we are staying a third night before heading to Bern, didn’t want to spread it.  Steve thinks it’s wine withdrawl.  I’ve gone 3 days without and I’m going into detox?

So it’s mixed reviews on Venice.

Time for Goodbyes

leavingmontalcino
Arrivederci Montalcino,
Just like Goldie-locks and the 3 bears, we  found Montalcino to be “juuuuust right”!  Not too big, not too small, but filled with  new friends, unique experiences, lovely customs, enthralling history, good food, fine wine, and now memories to last a lifetime.

Coming back from Roma and climbing the hill to our walled-city, “Friends” by Michael W. Smith was playing.  It is an all time favorite of mine, but now phrases like  “packing up the dreams God planted” and “Tho’ it’s hard to let you go, in the Father’s hand we know” have new meaning to me as tears streamed down my cheeks from under my sunglasses .

Yep, it’s time to pack and think about moving on.computeronterrace

This vacation was so much more than items to check off a list of things to see; it became home to us and we made some beautiful memories, some forever- friends, and shared it with some special people.  And just like a special recipe, all the ingredients came together ….juuuuust right.
