Buie Cousins

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

What a joy to be in Stone Harbor, N.J. and be able to gather with 5 of the 10 Buie cousins. We have not seen some of each other since 1969 and before. We range in age (gulp) from 70 to 59 of those you see here, but our time together reflected much younger spirits! And with all of our visiting, it certainly reminded us of the 5 sibling Buie’s who were the true originals! (and our parents) Carolyn and Jeff Serfass, Debbie and Steve Morales, Kathy Bauer, Linda Kress, Don Serfass and Siddy Serfass on the end. Cousins are Jeff,Debbie,Kathy,Linda, and Don!

Phreezing In Phillie

peoplemagPhiladelphia; City of Brotherly Love – not judging by our first taxicab driver. And don’t think that pedestrians have the right of way either!  The seasons are starting to change, but not as far along as I thought they would be, tho’ our time in the countryside has been minimal .  The cold and rain of the first few days have just served to remind us how challenging , and fun honest to goodness weather can be. Steve has had to put in 9hour days working the Rheumatology Convention(20thousand attendees) while I get to play. I went to Constitution Hall and enjoyed a live presentation of “We the People” and other displays. And then I did the female thing, and went to the Princess Diana exhibit…her dresses and bridal gown, etc.  It was the reliving of a tragic fairy tale. Lots of walking and then an evening with the senior Wilts. The city has Phillie Phever too! Great Phun!!DSC03836

Home Again, Home again, Giggidy Gig

stonecherubWhat I missed while gone…hmmmmmm,

My bed, my grandbaby’s hugs, my fuzzy bathrobe, my kids, knowing my way around without a GPS, and those who couldn’t join us in Montalcino. that’s all!

Everything else was just stuff and habit, and since we are rediscovering what and who we are without jobs, there is still a spirit of adventure lurking just below the surface!  So watch out!

On The Road Again, Salzburg To Munich

Friday, June 12th, 2009

paradeWe left early to head to Munich (just one day) but we were held up by a parade!  June 11 is a holiday in Austria and Germany that honors “religion” (that’s all I could get from the many people I asked).  All the church bells were ringing constantly, canons firing, and plenty marching bands and local citizens in their native garb.  All church’s were hanging a yellow and white  banner from their bell towers.  I love the local stuff that makes the area unique!

brittanyAfter the procession , we headed a 1/2 hour away to meet up with our niece, Brittany!  Here is a picture of she and her host family (so her folks see she arrived safely!).

Olympic Hopeful

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

olympicsIt was during our daily call to Steve’s dad, George, in Costa Mesa, that we mentioned our stay in Garmish-Partenkirchen; on hearing the location, he came alive with memories!!!

As a youth, he was inspired by the Olympics at Lake Placid  N.Y.to work  harder on his passion, speed skating ,and try for the next olympics (he was living in New York and was a young teenager).  He did try out when the time came, but only made it as second or third alternate to the Garmisch Olympic games in 1936, so he stayed home and continued to dream (he still has lots of medals on display in his home)!

With even more dedication, he focused on the next Winter Olympics but then came war in Europe.  So George,  with thoughts of you in our hearts, your son made it to Garmish .

soccerfansJust us 6 in Rome and 1000,000 of our closest soccer fanatic friends for the European Champions League Final (think SuperBowl)!

Mobs of chanting fans filled every imaginable street and sight (‘ cept the Vatican)  and were really quite charming and friendly to us.  No alcohol was allowed to be sold the day of the game, so only unbridled loyalty to their team fueled their enthusiasm.  Andy and Lisa nearly scored last minute tickets, but ended watching it, like most of the world, on TV.

When In Roma

vatican

When in Rome… fight traffic, heat and humidity, soccer fans, and take in incredible sights!

Jeane, Kathie, Andy, Lisa, and Steve and I occupied two apartments for several days seeing the Vatican, Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica, and much much more.  It was quite a contrast from our quiet little Montalcino, but to actually BE there and see so much history and beautiful art.

Even saw the Pope on Vatican Tv and in person, did a Hop On-Hop off Bus, and alot of walking.  Cool evenings with a glass of wine and people watching.

Then it was seeing Andy and Lisa off to the airport and leaving Kath and J for one day on their own in the Big City before their departure.

We sooooo enjoyed sharing all of this with them!!!!

Roman Holiday

Monday, May 25th, 2009

chieftainThe clock is ticking on Montalcino and Italy.  We have been enjoying the company of Andy, Lisa, Jeane and Kathie in Florence, Siena, Montalcino of course, and now headed to Roma.

We have heard lots of horror stories about pick-pockets and gypsies so we go with some intrepidation. And to top it all off, the SuperBowl of Soccer is this week.  It has been so hard to find accomdations .

We covet you prayers for our safety.  Did i mention we have a Heat Wave  90+ and humidity?

So we are off on another marvelous adventure!!!

Cooking Class

pastarollingCooking with AnnaLisa Tuscan Style

We all learned something about cooking, pasta, wine, tradition, and most of all hospitality on our day in Resta at the home of AnnaLisa. She shared with us her passions for the land, her wine, her home and the chapel on the grounds.

We cracked a few eggs, kneaded some dough, sliced and diced and made an awesome meal, that we enjoyed on the covered 2nd story terrace of her home.

annalisa2Our menu included foccacia, tagliatella, pinci, tomato/garlic sauce, an eggplant dish to die for and tirramisu .We all were delightfully  surprised on how fresh and wonderful it all tasted.

Several of us had had bad prior experiences with some of the dishes (I had never had an eggplant that I had liked, and most of us were not looking forward to the tirramisu).  Boy, were we blown away with how fabulous ,and amazing it all was.

The time with her and each other was almost an out-of-body experience as we reveled in the tuscan gastronomic  experience!
